What is the Portugal D3 Visa?
The D3 Visa, also known as the Highly Qualified Activity Visa, is designed for professionals with advanced qualifications or strong professional experience who have secured a job offer in Portugal.

It allows you to enter Portugal and apply for a residence permit, giving you the right to live, work, and build your future in the country.
Who is the D3 Visa For?
This visa is ideal for highly skilled professionals such as:
  • Executive and management positions
Company directors, senior executives, and high-level professionals in both the private and public sectors.
  • Specialists in intellectual and scientific fields
Professionals in areas such as medicine, science, information technology, engineering, education, culture, and law.
  • University professors and scientific researchers
Academic professionals and researchers engaged in advanced teaching, innovation, and scientific development.
Under Portuguese law, a highly qualified activity refers to a role that requires advanced technical expertise or appropriate professional qualifications. This typically includes individuals with higher education degrees or those with at least five years of relevant experience in specialized fields.

  • Professional Qualifications
Hold a recognized higher education degree (qualification level 6 of ISCED-2011) or demonstrate at least 5 years of relevant professional experience in a specialized field.
Two Application Pathways

There are two main ways to obtain a residence permit under the D3 Visa, depending on your situation.

1 Standard Process (Consular Visa)
The traditional route involves applying for a visa at the Portuguese consulate in your country of residence, followed by completing the residence permit process in Portugal.
Secure a Job Offer
Obtain a contract with a Portuguese employer for a qualified position.
Prepare Documentation
Collect and legalize all required documents.
Apply at the Portuguese Consulate
Submit your visa application in your country of residence. In some countries, this process is handled by official partners such as VFS Global.
Travel to Portugal
Receive your visa and enter Portugal.
Residence Permit Appointment (AIMA)
The D3 visa holder must attend an appointment at AIMA to provide biometric data and formalize the residence permit application. Complete your residence process and receive your residence card.
2 Direct Application in Portugal
In some cases, it is also possible to apply directly from within Portugal, without a prior visa, under specific legal conditions—offering a faster, single-step process.

An alternative option is to apply for the residence permit directly from within Portugal, without first obtaining a D3 visa.

Under Article 90(2) of the Foreigners Law, individuals who have legally entered Portugal and secure a qualifying work contract during their stay may submit their residence permit application directly to AIMA. This approach simplifies the process into a single stage, often making it faster and more efficient.
